Gutsy dalit entrepreneur scripted Maharashtra government bid for BR Ambedkar's London home

Maharashtra government’s successful bid to buy a London house where Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar once lived may never have taken place had Mumbai-based millionaire Kalpana Saroj not spotted the ‘For Sale’ sign at its door. Two years after Ambedkar’s death in 1956, Saroj was born to a poor Dalit family in rural Vidarbha. Married off at the age of 12 to a man many years her senior, she was tormented by her in-laws and her marriage broke down before she turned 13. After a failed suicide bid, she was determined to make something of her life and chose to script her success in Mumbai.
